I recently discovered that I am allergic to Gluten... drat! After over 20 years of daily headaches and stomach aches, we finally figured out that they were caused by a gluten sensitivity. I am no doctor, so I won't bore you with the effects of gluten, what exactly this all entails, what I can and can not eat... BUT for those of you who are right there with me and know exactly what this means I have GREAT news!

Traveling and having to avoid gluten is a real pain in the... you know what! Especially in Paris... let's just say, restaurants don't work the same there as they do here. What you see on the menu is what you get... that's it... no changes, no substitutions, nothing! So for those of you like me who try to avoid gluten so you don't end up curled up in a ball from stomach pains, here's a small solution!

More and more restaurants are offering gluten free options and stores are selling gluten free products... EVEN in Paris! Check out this link for more information and PLEASE feel free to share any other places that you may know! Cheers to Gluten Free... ehhh

There’s a great deal of talk now about the benefits of saunas….steam and infrared heat, even Dr. Oz is weighing in on the benefits.

I’ve tried them both and like them for different reasons. I won’t tell you my favorite as we have one at home and I can’t tell you how much I love it…but check out these links and try them out yourself. Most full service gyms have either a steam sauna or a hot coal sauna or a dry sauna ….some gyms/health spas have the far infrared light saunas.

Of course, always check with your doctor before trying anything new but read a little about it before you do!!! The claims are not ours but we formed our own opinions from research and trying….you might do the same and enjoy!!

I am on a "get rid of everything I ate during the Holidays diet," so of course I am searching for foods I can't eat so I can stare and salivate... yummmm!

Check out this video on how to make Raspberry Clafouti... it's short, easy, and DELICIOUS! We like to make ours using Cherries with the pits still in as they add a wonderful almondy flavor. We also use creme fraiche instead of half and half if you can get it. ENJOY... as I surely can't....yet!

For those of you who have never been to Paris and are unfamiliar with how the Sales work there, here is a quick overview... Sales are state regulated in Paris and typically run during two times of the year- once in the Summer, right before everyone leaves in August for Holiday and again shortly after Christmas time... ie NOW!

Winter sales start TODAY Wednesday January 11th and run until Tuesday February 14th. Due to the economic times, the government has allowed stores to offer "unofficial" sales throughout the year if necessary. However the Winter and Summer sale periods are still THE times to shop the sales!

If you are like me, then being able to afford half the high end fashion in these photos is not realistic, so do what I do... find a few styles that you love, figure out why you love them... is it the color, the style, the accessories, the shoes... whatever it may be... then bargain shop and create your own look!

I love boutique shopping for this very reason, I get ideas in my head and mix and match a bunch of things until I feel comfortable enough to really OWN the outfit... whether I save up to spend the $200 on that great pair of shoes only to match it with a dress and bag I got on sale... or buy that AMAZING scarf that adds that extra panache... whatever it is, it's yours and you rock it!

IT DOESN’T FIT….

No kidding…unless you are buying your clothes “sur mesure” or you are the universal clone size, some clothes that would be otherwise absolutely stunning won’t be without a tuck here, a dart there or some alteration.

Every designer and every woman who appreciates style knows not to underestimate the value of a good tailor.

REALLY, all kidding and cliché’s aside, I recently went shopping with my mother, yes mother. She tried on both a leather blazer and a suit that were nice but I was less than impressed…until she let the tailor (this store had one on site) take a look.

The result was transforming…. both to her appearance and my perspective. I never imagined the difference a few minor alterations could make, let alone the value of a timeless piece that becomes a style chameleon with an accessory or make up change.

In the photo she is wearing the blazer and the pants from the suit with one of our flea market treasures…. a Dries Van Noten scarf.

I am now a convert and from now on my “prêt a porter” finds will selectively come under the tailor’s scrutiny for that little extra transforming je ne sais quoi.

As to the accessory magic, more to come on that one…. stay tuned!

For those of you women out there who enjoy football as much as me, then today's topic is right up your alley! Suzanne Johnson, wife of JETS coach Woody Johnson, has decided to help the NFL launch its revamped women's collection according to WWD. Johnson says "They could have taken a supermodel, who is going to look good in a paper bag. But we are the ones wearing the clothes when we cheer on our teams every week." SO TRUE!

She started by rounding up her pals and wearing green Jets jerseys to Badgley Mischka's runway show which got quite a positive response!

In addition to the NFL women's line, all 32 teams have pieces for college girls through the Victoria's Secret Pink collection. All gear is being sold through team stadium shops, select retailers such as Kohls, and through NFLshop.com.

According to WWD, as if that wasn't enough, fans can get fashion tips about how to show their team pride via NFL.com/women. They also explain that the NFL now has a 44% female fan base and about 350,000 women attending games each week... nice work sports fans!

This past Sunday, Suzanne Johnson hosted the first women's wear pop-up event before the Jets/Patriots game. "I have wanted a Jets jersey, and I have been wearing little boys' small for too many years."

She created a pregame Miami-nightclub-inspired shopping experience... where fans could browse racks of NFL-inspired apparel, handbags, footwear, and jewelry.

O wait.... THERE'S MORE! Besides an accessories collaboration, the NFL will most likely team up with Tiffany & Co. for the Super Bowl in 2014... I wonder what that could mean!!!

The ISIC card, as it is most frequently referred to, is basically your shot at countless discounts. Besides discounts... which let's be honest, what could be better?!?... it's easy to obtain and cheap! TRUST me on this one... I have used it MANY times and it's well worth it!

You can use it to take advantage of offers on travel, shopping, museums and more.

Who's able to get one of these cards? Any full time student from age 12- 102... full time being 15 hours per week and at least 12 weeks per year.

For those of you who are still under 26 or have children under the age of 26, but are no longer students... don't worry there is a card for you as well that provides similar discounts!

For an unknown reason to me... if you have the answer PLEASE share I would be delighted to know... if you book a flight on Tuesday night it's always cheaper! I am sure you are thinking... this lady is crazy! But trust me I have tested this time and time again and each time it has proved to be correct.

So I dare you to take the challenge... look at flights tonight and then look again tomorrow and you will see no deals and an increase in price... or try Monday night and then look again Tuesday... no matter what it's always the same!

Do you love the new trendy Paris bistro or the iconic Paris staples? No matter what you choose, the Paris Bistro, for me, is one of my guiltiest pleasures…more about a state of mind. Brasseries are great for on the go but a lovely Bistro is where you go to bask in the French experience, breathe in the perfumes of well cooked food and a great glass of wine.

Travel and Leisure has showcased a few this past month, both iconic and chic. They are predicting great things for Septime in the 11^tharrondisment with its “farmer chic vibe” and “poetic…deliciousness”. As much as I have taken mental notes on this and other recommendations, I can’t always help myself from going back to a few favorites.

Chez l’Ami Jean is just around the corner from my resting place so you might say I go there for convenience sake…not true. Well maybe a wee little bit… but just thinking about the lingering meals with just the right wine and carefully packing dessert into the minutest of space left afterwards leaves me…well…not quite daintily drooling. I do venture out of the seventh though for one Bistro that really epitomizes the Bistro experience…. Bistro Paul Bert. The food, the atmosphere, the people, the food ….did I mention the food. All orchestrated by one of my heroes…I really like food, don’t I! Well, when in Paris who doesn’t.

Anyway, if you venture over to Paul Bert, one of our favorite shopping guides…Angela just might give you a wink and a smile and serve some of the best Bistro fare in Paris…at least according to me. Bistro Paul Bert 18 rue Paul Bert 11^th.

I love Audrey Hepburn and the way she wore a little black dress and made it one of the most iconic fashion staples of the twentieth century. It is still a timeless wardrobe essential. Although you can trace the mystique of this little chameleon to the 1920’s and Coco Chanel and a more pragmatic direction through the 60’s... to Dior’s more dangerous appeal, it wasn’t until Ms. Hepburn wore it in Breakfast at Tiffany’s that the LBD came into it’s own.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one of my go to movies….whether I’m sad, frustrated, in a great mood, looking for inspiration, fashion or otherwise, it just works for me.

Not surprisingly, I love little black dresses too. I have my everyday little black dress, my special occasion little black dress, the get out of my way little black dress, the maybe so maybe not so innocent little one….it goes on for a while. Parisian women have learned how to take the LBD and spin it for all occasions. I’ve taken a lesson from them and from one of my favorite actresses and done the same.

So ladies, I began this little entry with one of her quotes and will end it with one as well….

When I buy fashion magazines, I not only look at the obvious...fashion... but I love reading the articles that they choose to put in each month.

The November issue of Elle has a great article written by "Fashion know it all" Anne Slowey about her experience in fashion, relationship with her mother, obsession with her appearance, and her complete transformation once she gives birth to her first child... I'm sure many of you can relate! I was simply captivated from page to page... some things I could relate to, some I found completely ridiculous... but all in all I thought very well written.

Slowey explains "...to me, getting dressed is a creative act of imagining all of life's complex pleasures at the beginning of every day. The best of fashion- the joy of endless possibilities, choices, and attitudes of expression- is what has made me tick for more than 20 years in the business..."

It's that time of year again... time to start pulling out the boots, spandex, jeans, and layers... it's Fall! One of the prettiest times of year, as the leaves begin to change colors and you are left surrounded by fields of greens, reds, yellows, and oranges... stunning!

One thing we noticed while in Paris is that Red and Green are back... thank goodness! I am a huge fan of colors and nothing excites me more than seeing cities filled with clothes other than black! Parisian Dinner

For some reason, despite all the amazing choices for food in Paris, I have been CRAVING Asian. Two nights ago we decided to try the Parisian delivery experience and ordered sushi online... we were so dead from working non stop we couldn't even make it out the door for dinner!

The sushi delivery was QUITE an experience... it took 3 attempts online, and several phone calls to ensure them that we really weren't going to pick it up, we actually did want it delivered. All in all though they could not have been nicer... and if you find yourself exhausted in Paris and unable to get out the door and eat, try Sushi Shop. Their food is tres bon!

Tonight I decided I couldn't live without one of my favorite meals in Paris, it's not particularly fancy, not particularly Parisian, but it IS particularly good! We took our tired little feet straight to Wok where I had the most delicious nems (sort of a like a crispy little spring roll) ever and practiced my new French while ordering all the little spices and sauce ingredients for my personally chosen bowl of heaven just for me... mmmm

My favorite part is watching them prepare it right before my eyes... see for yourself!

Now off to practice my French...

I love fashion and one of my favorite things to do while in Paris, is to people watch... looking at the newest trends that haven't quite hit the states, and peruse the stores soaking in what will soon be the IT pieces in America.

The US has seen a lot of this already... but I have noticed that there is one item ALL over the place... if you guessed leather then you are CORRECT. I am not just talking leather jackets here... but leather trimmed pants, shirts, dresses, coats, boots... you name it, leather has touched it!

Alas, we arrived safely yesterday, survived our first day... barely...successfully made it through the second, AND got a lot accomplished... SCORE!

Break time at the apartment and all of a sudden I heard loud music coming through my window...hmm I wonder what that could be? I peaked outside the balcony and to my complete and utter astonishment the wonderfully loud noises (that sounded as if they were coming from a band of 50) were coming from two men on opposite sides of the street... not only was it just TWO men but they were "talking" back and forth to each other through their music, as if they were having their own little conversation! I was mesmerized.

Naturally, I couldn't help but take a video...so hopefully you enjoy this as much as I did!

Tomorrow we leave again for Paris! For once, I am going to take my own advice and PACK LIGHT! I have checked the weather and decided to bring an assortment of jeans (black, bright blue, green, and red), a few tops, scarves, accessories, and two pairs of shoes. I am forcing myself not to pack anymore and to leave plenty of room. I have my camera all set to take TONS of pics and videos and let everyone experience Paris the way we do!

It's delicious, easy to make, and you can find them all over France. It's Tuesday! Time for the travel tip!

There are plenty of scams that people try to pull on tourists- so keep an eye out for anything suspicious...

There is one in particular that I noticed a few times when I was traveling with a group of girl friends and never would have recognized if it hadn't been for a friend who had seen the trick before! So consider me your friend giving you the warning...

We were walking down the Seine (river that runs through Paris dividing it into the Left bank and the right bank), when an older woman bent down in front of us and stood up holding a gold ring. She stopped us frantically and told us we must have dropped this as we were walking!

Pause...we all stared at each other wondering what in the world was going on, my friend grabbed us, told us to hold our purses, and walk away as quickly as possible... what in the WORLD is going on!?

Thank goodness she said something to us because had she not, and we waited to answer this mysterious woman, we would have been pick pocketed... while the women tried to sell us the "pure gold" ring...for a great deal more than she paid for it, before she so casually dropped in front of us...Close Call!

It's getting to be that time of year again when everyone breaks out their leggings! Where did summer go?!?

Nowadays you can get them anywhere and in a variety of different colors and styles- black, grey, white, blue, red, green, yellow, leather, ripped, strapped, zippers, patterned, and the list goes on.

A brand that I will swear by, although they can be on the more expensive side, is Wolford. You can buy them at Bon Marche in Paris- they have an ENTIRE section dedicated to just Wolford and most departments stores over there carry quite a large variety. You can find them in department stores here in the states as well, and Rue La La often sells them at bargain prices- WOOP!

The great thing about leggings is that they can be worn with flats, boots, EVEN heels. Pair them with a nice sweater, a blazer, and my favorite... SCARVES! I don't think you can have enough, I absolutely live in these in the fall and winter time. Not only are they a staple here, but of course they are very in, in the o so fashionable Paris. So go ahead... buy a pair!

I am getting ready for my next visit to Paris, HOORAY! I am also shopping here at home for an upcoming formal event…because clearly I need more clothes...

Just as you have to know where you are shopping and what you are buying when you are in Paris, I learned that the same thing applies here in the good old USA when bargain hunting.

I just recently bought a beautiful pair of designer jeans at TJ’s… the price tag said $59.98 and the retail price was over 200 bucks… SCORE. I looked even closer and saw the actual tag was still on the pants… wait for it… 375 dollars, DOUBLE SCORE! Great bargain!

I continued on and looked at some D&G items, $599... original suggested retail price over $800, at first glance it looks like this is yet, another great deal! But wait...what's this...the actual label price was 450 euro...well how many dollars is that? About $633.. that my friends is NOT such a great bargain, only 34 dollars off, no thank you! They tricked me!!

Moral of the story- when shopping, ALWAYS look, try, and ask before you buy, no matter where you are! TJ’s new runway section is great IF you know what you are doing…

People always ask me for my travel tips when they go abroad. I finally decided to make it easier for all and share a new tip once a week... why not Tuesdays?

I will start with a small story...when traveling with my Mother, she brings maybe 2 bottoms and 3 or four tops, some accessories and THAT'S IT! I have always made fun of her for doing this... being as clothes obsessed as I am, how in the world does she plan on making that work??? What if clothes get dirty or WORSE, what if she re-wears something?? Sinful! But it wasn't until a few months ago when I had to buy a completely new bag and then pay extra (there goes my money) for getting it on the plane that I realized... hmm maybe she's onto something.

Ready for travel tip 1? TRAVEL LIGHT!!! I can not emphasize this enough, so I will say it again... TRAVEL. LIGHT.

For starters, as I learned the hard way, you will not and I repeat you WILL NOT wear everything you pack. As much as you want to bring all the trendy clothes that you own, DON'T! Bring a few staples, and some accessories to lively up the outfits...otherwise you are just using space that is needed for your newly purchased items.

Secondly, there ARE washing machines abroad. Trust me, if you need to wash your clothes, you will be able to do so!

Thirdly, and obviously most important- you WILL buy things when you travel. If you don't leave room in your bag, there will not be a place to put your wonderful purchases (and they will be wonderful)...your bag won't zip, you'll have to buy a new one, then you'll have to pay extra for the extra bag AND the added weight...who wants to spend all that extra money just to get your luggage on board?? Helloooo... NOT ME!

Lastly, on travel days, it's inevitable that you will be tired... so carrying around a bag that is 30lbs heavier than it should be is NOT a good idea... you will become angry, cranky, and not someone that anyone, including yourself wants to be around... so take it from me... TRAVEL LIGHT!

There are a ton of different ways to wear a scarf... long, short, wrap around once, a few times, tie it a knot, twisted... the list is endless.

The last time I went to Paris, I stumbled upon the most GORGEOUS Christian Dior vintage scarf... I am talking TO. DIE. FOR. I was immediately drawn to it. I ran, literally, over to where it was displayed and before I even picked it up, I knew I had to have it.

Hmph... as I lifted it up, it was much bigger than I had anticipated and wasn't sitting properly on my neck... what is a girl to do!

ALAS! After going back and forth with the lovely sales person for what seemed like a decade, I finally figured out a way to make it work. Just because it's a scarf, doesn't mean you have to wear it around your neck... no I don't mean wear it as a shirt or skirt or dress...though this does work in some instances, if the scarf is big enough of course... BUT I will use it as decoration!

Now I am sure you are probably thinking "hello, is she crazy??!?!" but I found this gorgeous frame, had the scarf pressed to get out wrinkles and creases, and it now hangs beautifully in my bedroom...Voilaaaa!

I could not be happier about my purchase!

I am not a huge "purse person," if I could I would spend all my money on clothes and jewelry. I have my staple purses of course- brown, black, big, small... options that go with just about everything. Well recently my staple black purse has reached its end...tear... and I desperately needed something to take it's place.

Possibly the most frustrating thing in the world to deal with. I am going to Paris to enjoy myself, why must I have to worry about physically holding my eyes open so I don't fall asleep while walking....

ALAS my friends, I found a trick that seems to work just perfectly for my non-stop trips back and forth. At first I was a bit weary of the suggestion, but now I swear by it! It's easy and simple...ready for it?

...Stay awake for the entire first day! That's it! Nothing to it! Well, in reality that first day when you get off the plane all you want to do is fall in bed, close your eyes, and sleep the day away, but I assure you... if you stay awake by the end of the day your bed will be the most comfortable place in the world.

I passed my secret along to a friend who tried it out this past Spring...he barely made it through that first day... you don't believe me? His response to "Bonjour" (hello) was "Thank You." Clearly he was not all there, BUT the rest of his trip he was alert and in the correct time zone... and looking back that first day was well worth it!

Next time you are in Paris, I dare you to try my trick...

Where Did You Find That!

A group of us took a trip after we graduated college to Paris for a week. Some of us had been a few times, studied abroad there, and some had never been before. We did the typical touristy thing and went to the Louvre, Eiffel Tower and various other attractions, but because I had been so many times I decided to take us on a few adventures....

After a night out, we decided to venture around the 7th (Paris is split into arrondissements, also known as sections, 20 to be exact) and find a vintage shop that I had been told great things about. We mapped out our route and figured it should only take about 5 minutes to walk there... needless to say, 45 minutes later we still weren't there...everyone was beginning to lose faith.

Finally, my purse obsessed friend spotted a vintage Louis that SHE of all people had never seen before... this seriously must be a one of a kind. We stopped in and instantly she told us she must have it... ding ding SOLD! We grabbed her after her first purchase and ran out before she continued buying the store...

At this point, it had been over a hour, we were hungry, lost, and confused...then in front of us we spotted a street with a few shops- let's go! I confidently stated that this was my plan all along! (psshh little did they know) After taking 5 steps, we stumbled upon possibly the smallest store known to man, with more stuffed in it than a Thanksgiving Turkey. It was there that I spotted my vintage Celine gold circle necklace, worn by old celebs and restored... I was in heaven. An hour later and 3 bags each, we left feeling happy, satisfied, and accomplished. Not EVEN a huge dent in our wallets, SCORE! Little somethings for ourselves and gifts galore for our families... I would have to say, GREAT SUCCESS and lesson learned- walking the streets of Paris until you are lost, hungry, and delirious is the only way to find that special something ;)

Paris Flea Markets

Paris Flea Markets are a different animal.

Many of the flea markets here in the states are simply cheap prices and hit or miss items. You could go one week and find exactly what you were looking for and then go back the next and not find a single thing. So of course when the suggestion of Paris flea markets came up on my last trip, I had my reservations.

I had visited several markets in Paris in the past and was really turned off by the hawkers and frankly, tacky items… I’ve already been thoroughly disappointed each time. I know what to expect- a million people running around like chickens with their heads cut off while vendors shove items down your throat. Not my idea of a good time. I was ASSURED that this time would be different if I just let her take the lead. Sure, why not.

We arrive, zoom past the normal chaos of the front markets and land ourselves in a completely different area. Side street upon side street of dazzling items, room to walk, vendors catering to people IN actual stores, not those running past them. Alas I can actually see 10 feet in front of me! Little cafes, crepes, ICE CREAM… hmm I could get used to this.

We start with tapestries, not my thing, but the owners are so pleasant and the prices are great! Clearly, my mother and her interior decorator side are in heaven. I wait patiently, fantasizing about the possibility of things I might find, then stop myself, don’t get your hopes up, you don’t want to be let down again! We leave, smiles on both our faces, obviously for different reasons at this point.

I am overwhelmed by what I see, what I want, and the array of items calling my name! Then I see it…a 1950’s green, fur hood, aviator bomber jacket, the real McCoy… I’m intrigued. I slip it on and it fits perfectly. I stare into the mirror and am in awe at what looks back at me, this is beautiful, unique, classic, and it FITS! My smile now stretches from ear to ear, we look at the price tag and it’s… wait for it….REASONABLE… it’s decided we must get it! First purchase and I am beyond ecstatic.

We continue on…vintage Hermes ties, one of a kind Chanel pieces not only no longer made, but barely a handful ever sold, one of a kind Goyard bags, unique furniture, men’s, women’s, children’s clothes, paintings, exotic jewelry, china, accessories and more… o my! We spend almost the entire day and at the end of it, I look at my Mother and say… I want to move in.

Lesson learned- never underestimate the flea markets, and never go “unchaperoned” you will end up lost and unsatisfied… take it from me…an experienced shopper.

Paris Chocolate

It’s true, Chocolate is better in Paris. Don’t believe me? Plan your next trip to include a stopover in Paris and experience it for yourself!

I have eaten many chocolates but believe it or not, was a diehard Hershey’s chocolate fan...kisses to be exact, straight from the source in Hershey Pa. Hands down, no competition. I know, seems a little pedestrian, but I had sampled quite a few mini blocks from around the globe. Reese’s peanut butter cups, Chocolate and peanut butter, who ever thought of this was just pure genius. Just ask ET!

So I ask again, how is chocolate BETTER in Paris? Well, I will tell you…imagine biting into the most decadent piece of candy you have ever had melt in your mouth. It’s fresh, exotic, seductive, the magical vapor trail of chocolate decadence drawing you in as soon as you walk into the store. You are overwhelmed by the delicate fragrance, the silky texture of each little pristine morsel beckoning you to try one. No, not factory chocolate, but handmade, piece by piece, by artisanal hands, straight to perfection. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, chocolate caramel, chocolate pecans, chocolate and coconut, chocolate and bountiful fruits from faraway places, chocolate with chocolate and more chocolate…oh please, I need a little napkin as my mouth has succumbed to the temptation...

And you can’t just have one… they are my latest petits opiacés. Your hand glides toward that box, over and over; Oops, quelle horreur (what a horror)… the package is empty! Where can I get more!!

Of course there are chocolate shops everywhere in Paris…some are better than others, but imagine being able to just stop in and purchase hand made chocolate at places dedicated to selling JUST CHOCOLATE, are they trying to make me huge???

La Maison du chocolat, La Mere de Famille, Le Chat Bleu….Michel Ch….no he is my secret hero. You will have to find him on your own. Take it from me, I turned a non chocolate lover, I know how can this be, into a chocolate guru after just ONE visit… so go ahead, I dare you… try some!

Paris In July

Paris in July! Sales, picnics, lovers strolling hand in hand, people watching, kir royal (my favorite drink!) and fireworks!! We’ll skip past the lovers right now; that's a whole other blog.

Paris in July is so full of life, I could barely wait to drop my suitcase and head for the boulangerie. Diet be damned; I ate my way through croissants, crepes and crème brulee, naming only a few of course. The chocolate opportunities are endless.

Eating in Paris for me is as sensual an experience as shopping: each little morsel to be savored. I don’t know how it happens, whether it is that I walk everywhere or calories really don’t count there but my gustatory splurges don’t seem to do much damage. I can’t say the same for the shopping expeditions.

This time, I focused on accessories. Who knew they could add up so fast and at the flea markets, no less. That little Chanel necklace with her signature camellia and the Hermes ties for all the men in my life…calme toi… no scandalous affairs…that Goyard bag that NO ONE else had but me. It’s all worth it. The sales take a strong constitution, experience, and a plan but armed with that, the possibilities are endless…boutiques, department stores, flea markets and street markets. They all have something unique.

Bastille Day (French National Day!) brought a different kind of excitement. Fireworks! I stayed close enough to the Tour Eiffel to walk to a great vantage point to watch the spectacle…and what a spectacle. From the bridge, I with thousands of others craned our necks, oohed and aahed and ate, of course, while the show began and ended with a magical vibe matched only by the colors and spirit of the crowd. Vive la France! And vive French food and shopping!

My First Trip To Paris

I was 11 years old when I first visited Paris. We took the trip during the Holiday season and I was hesitant about being away from home for Christmas. How would Santa find us? How would we get our presents? And most importantly what if they didn’t have the right kind of cookies to leave for the reindeer? I was assured that Santa would find us and Christmas would be just like at home; however I was not fully convinced.

When I stepped off the plane in Paris for the first time I was overwhelmed: the sounds I heard were beautiful but incomprehensible and next to security guards carrying guns the size of me, well it was a lot to behold! What exactly could they be looking for? It was Christmas. Who could they shoot at Christmas! One of the guards winked at me and somehow managed to squeeze a half laugh three quarter smile out of me. I was reassured that everything would be ok. Still not convinced though.

We got our bags, went through customs, and got into a cab. The cab driver drove wildly out of control; where was he taking us and if he didn’t slow down how would we even get there?? I was beginning to regret agreeing to this trip.

Finally we turned onto a tiny side street and stopped in front of a door. The streets were so unique and narrow as were the buildings and the enormous doors! It was freezing cold and drizzling yet everyone was impeccably dressed. Somehow my brother’s batman cape fluttering in the wind even looked less ridiculous. I felt as if I were in a dream. Everyone and everything moved to a different rhythm... I couldn’t help stopping and trying to take it all in. Maybe I would like this place after all...

I was eager to see what could be behind that gargantuan door in front of us, as I wondered ‘is everything in Paris bigger than life?’ We walked in and I was in awe. The kitchen was in the main room with the bathroom off to one side. There were windows as tall as the sky, which I soon learned was Santa’s Parisian entry. A wooden ladder took us upstairs to the bedroom; it was like a tree house inside!

We left the apartment in search of a tiny Christmas tree. We walked across a bridge that looked over the Isle de France. Everything sparkled. We found a tiny tree…tiny compared to what we would have had at home, but I was too distracted by the incredible little treat, a crepe with nutella, to notice.

As we took our little snow-covered tree back to our home away from home for the holidays, the shopkeeper ran after us screaming incomprehensibly in French. I was frozen in my tracks but my mother was smiling so warmly, I couldn’t help but wonder what in the world was going on. He handed her the most precious handmade ornament for our tree! He took my mom by the shoulders and kissed both her cheeks and then the same for me despite my chocolaty face and wished us a Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday in Paris.

At that moment I knew… this was my first visit to Paris but by no means would it be my last. I was touched by the magic of Paris and I still am….

The Je Ne Sais Quoi of Shopping in Paris

The Je ne sais quoi of shopping in Paris…how does one define it.

It is something to be savored like fine wine or that little tiny piece of heavenly chocolate from Michel Chaudun that is better than sinful.

It’s the scarf you take home; you know the vintage Dries van Noten you picked up in the chic 7^th, the shop just off Rue Cler. You wear it to the little dinner party you’re throwing for a few friends and associates back home. The table you set is, oh so…French…. layered with the tapestry and antique linens you picked up in Cligancourt (Paris Flea Markets!) and positively glowing in the candlelight from the little candles you picked up in, of all places, Monoprix!! Who knew? Shhhh…. your guests don’t know.

You glide past them, trailing that incredible scarf, leaving a vapor trail of silky dark fragrance; you found that perfume in the salons de palais royal, or did it find you. The bell jars of Serge Lutens. The name alone leaves an impression but not quite like that scent. They are whispering about it and you, as you pour another Kir Royal.

You don’t mind; all but one of those little comments floating behind you is whispered with quiet admiration. It’s hard to decide at this moment whether you are having more fun with the appreciative whispers or that other one….the look that is turning greener with each sip of your new favorite little aperitif. You’re having fun, savoring the moment and remembering. Shopping in Paris: try it and create your own little stir.
